As many families across America enjoy a summer weekend or take an annual vacation, August inevitably is a big month for water sports—at the beach, on our rivers and lakes, or at the local pool or water park.

The American Red Cross has a comprehensive online water safety tip sheet that covers virtually every fun water experience: from jet skiing to surfing, from windsailing to rafting, from snorkeling to tubing.  Among their general water safety tips:  “Watch out for the dangerous ‘too’s’ – too tired, too cold, too far from safety, too much sun, too much strenuous activity.”

And, of course, the cardinal safety tip underlying all the recommendations:  Learn to swim.
