Childhood Obesity Rates Plateau
Earlier today the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) released a study that showed childhood obesity rates plateauing over the past several years. This indicates that a number of societal factors played a role in increasing obesity rates among our nation’s teenagers - not least of which was the staggering reduction of physical activity in children’s lives. We all know that weight gain occurs when calories consumed are greater than calories expended – and with today’s kids spending upwards of 6 hours a day in front of a screen it’s no wonder that we’ve seen the increases in obesity that we have. We agree that kids should have more physical activity and recess time whether before, during, or after school.
