New Study Once Again Confirms Benefits of 100 Percent Juice

In response to “Relationship between 100% Juice Consumption and Nutrient Intake and Weight of Children 2 to 11 Years,” a study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Maureen Storey, senior vice president for science policy for the American Beverage Association (ABA), said:

“One hundred percent juice is an important part of an overall healthy lifestyle and provides key nutrients for both children and adults.  This is confirmed once again by this latest study, which gives health professionals and parents the scientific basis needed to encourage children to drink 100 percent juice.

We know that 100 percent juice can provide essential nutrients that are needed for children’s growth and development.  Just as with whole fruit, 100 percent juice provides vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  In fact, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans acknowledges that one cup of 100 percent juice is equivalent to one serving of fruit.  Dr. Nicklas’ latest research not only shows that 100 percent juice helps children get these essential nutrients, but that children who drink juice also eat more whole fruit.  This is all good news.

In addition, this study found that, although the juice drinkers consumed more calories than the non-drinkers, there was no link between drinking 100 percent juice and obesity.  In fact, Dr. Nicklas and her fellow authors showed no association even among the children who consumed the most juice.

Finally, Dr. Nicklas’ study shows that children, on average, aren’t drinking as much 100 percent juice as is recommended. Therefore, pediatricians and other health professionals should feel confident in recommending 100 percent juice as a healthy beverage option for children.”
