American Beverage Association Statement on Oral Health

"The woman referenced in this article did not receive dental health services for more than 20 years - two-thirds of her life. To single out diet soda consumption as the unique factor in her tooth decay and erosion - and to compare it to that from illicit drug use - is irresponsible. The body of available science does not support that beverages are a unique factor in causing tooth decay or erosion. However, we do know that brushing and flossing our teeth, along with making regular visits to the dentist, play a very important role in preventing them."

American Beverage Association Comments on Poster Session on Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake

“This abstract, which is not peer-reviewed nor published in a way where its methodology can be fully evaluated, is more about sensationalism than science.  It does not show that consuming sugar-sweetened beverages causes chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer – the real causes of death among the studied subjects. The researchers make a huge leap when they take beverage intake calculations from around the globe and allege that those beverages are the cause of deaths which the authors themselves acknowledge are due to chronic disease.”

American Beverage Association Comments on Sugar and Diabetes

“This study does not show – or even attempt to show – that consuming sugar causes diabetes. In fact, its most robust finding confirms the well-established relationship between obesity and diabetes risk.  Importantly, however, the study’s conclusions on sugar and diabetes should be viewed cautiously given that the underlying model failed to consider the potential impact of solid fats – such as butter, cheese and lard – or factor for family history.”

Beverage Industry Responds to CSPI Petition to FDA

“Everyone has a role to play in reducing obesity levels – a fact completely ignored in this petition. This is why the beverage industry has worked to increase options and information for consumers,

  • Today about 45 percent of all non-alcoholic beverages purchased have zero calories and the overall average number of calories per beverage serving is down 23 percent since 1998.
  • Beverage companies voluntarily removed full-calorie soft drinks from all schools and replaced them with lower-calorie choices, resulting in a 90 percent reduction in beverage calories shipped to schools since 2004.
  • Beverage companies voluntarily added calorie labels to the front of all their packages, making it easier than ever for consumers to know how many calories are in their beverage choice before making a purchase.
  • Americans are consuming 37 percent fewer calories from sugar in soft drinks and other sweetened beverages than in 2000, according to the CDC.

American Beverage Association Statement to ABC World News

“The DAWN Report is more sensational than substantive.  The report suggests that of the 136 million emergency room visits in a year, less than two one-hundredths of a percent are allegedly associated with energy drinks.  Of that amount, 42 percent were by someone who had admitted to consuming alcohol or taking illegal substances or pharmaceuticals.  In addition, we know nothing about the overall health of these individuals, if they had consumed other caffeinated products, taken medications or accurately self-reported any of the above. Nor do we know what symptoms or incidents brought them to the ER in the first place.  Without this information it’s impossible to understand the actual role – if any – of energy drinks in these hospital visits.

Beverage Industry Responds to DAWN Report on Energy Drinks

“This report does not share information about the overall health of those who may have consumed energy drinks, or what symptoms brought them to the ER in the first place.  In fact, it shows that 42 percent of the reported ER visits were by someone who had admitted to consuming alcohol or taking illegal substances or pharmaceuticals.  However, there is no way to assess whether any of the remaining individuals chose not to report this fact, and the consumption of those substances along with energy drinks means the energy drinks may be irrelevant.  Additionally, there is no basis by which to understand the overall caffeine intake of any of these individuals – from all sources, from coffee or other caffeinated products.

Importantly, caffeine has been deemed safe for consumption by the FDA and most mainstream energy drinks contain about half the caffeine of a similarsize cup of coffeehouse coffee.”

American Beverage Association Responds to Unpublished Research on Sweetened Beverages and Depression

“We may be in a new year, but there is nothing new about the ways our critics try to attack our industry.  This research is nothing more than an abstract – it has not been peer-reviewed, published or even, at the very least, presented at a scientific meeting.  Furthermore, neither this abstract nor the body of scientific evidence supports that drinking soda or other sweetened beverages causes depression.  Thus, promoting any alleged findings without supporting evidence is not only premature, but irresponsible.”

American Beverage Association Responds to Unpublished Research on Beverages and Obesity

“This is yet another example of science by press release.  This research has not been published in a scientific or academic journal, nor even accepted for publication or peer-reviewed.  Promoting its findings is not only premature, but irresponsible.

What we do know about this research is that it supports the important role that schools and families play in educating students about the importance of leading balanced, active and healthy lifestyles.  Since 2006, our industry has been helping America’s schoolchildren do just that with our national School Beverage Guidelines, which removed full-calorie soft drinks from all schools and replaced them with more lower-calorie, smaller-portion choices.  Our efforts have driven a 90 percent reduction in beverage calories shipped to schools between 2004 and the end of the 2009-2010 school year according to independent research actually published in the American Journal of Public Health.”

Beverage Industry Responds to British Medical Journal Series

"It’s important to note that the series of articles in the British Medical Journal exhibited a clear bias by overlooking widely accepted research on sports drinks.  Furthermore, suggesting that industry-funded nutrition-related scientific studies may bias conclusions fails to look at the merits of the science in those studies and disregards the integrity of the peer-review process enforced by the highly regarded scientific journals.

Importantly, we know hydration is essential for good health, and science clearly shows that the water, carbohydrates and electrolytes in sports drinks provide significant hydration and athletic performance benefits. Furthermore, our member companies' marketing makes it clear that these functional beverages are formulated for athletes and those who are physically active. However, sports drinks – which are available in a range of calories - can also be an option for those who are working out, training, exposed to high temperatures or simply seeking refreshment as part of an active and healthy lifestyle."

They can be enjoyed as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle.  Furthermore, despite the authors’ suggestions, corporate social responsibility programs are not unique to our industry.  They are widely recognized and embraced by leading businesses around the globe.   To suggest otherwise is not only untrue, but shines a light on the inherent bias of this opinion piece.

Beverage Industry Responds to American Medical Association Action on Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes

“The intention of the American Medical Association to seek ways to help reduce overweight and obesity in America is an admirable goal that our industry fully supports. However, funding anti-obesity programs through discriminatory taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages is misguided.  Even the AMA’s report acknowledges that sugar-sweetened beverage taxes alone are ‘unlikely to significantly impact the prevalence of obesity and other adverse outcomes.’

To be clear, the AMA’s report is not calling for taxes on soda as a solution to obesity.  The body of science proves, and real world evidence demonstrates, that taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages will not have a meaningful impact on obesity.  History also shows that revenues from existing soda taxes are not being used to improve public health. Americans can't trust that new taxes would be used any differently.  We are committed to working with key stakeholders on comprehensive approaches that will have a lasting and meaningful impact on obesity.”

American Beverage Association Responds to HBO "The Weight of the Nation" Documentary Series

“We applaud HBO for producing a comprehensive documentary series that delves into the questions and concerns about obesity in America.  We agree that the complexity of obesity – both causes and solutions – is a serious topic that impacts individuals and policy makers. Our industry has taken voluntary steps to be part of meaningful solutions that will have a real and lasting impact when it comes to reducing obesity in America. However, it is disappointing that HBO narrowed the viewpoints in the documentary to those of certain health activists who advocate extreme policies and perpetuate inaccuracies and falsehoods about our industry and its beverages.”

Beverage Industry Responds to British Medical Journal Paper on Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes

“Taxing sugar-sweetened beverages will not reduce obesity, nor will it have a truly meaningful impact on obesity-related health conditions.  There is a vast body of available science to support this.  For instance, a review by George Mason University researchers showed that even a 20 percent tax on soda would reduce an obese person’s Body Mass Index from 40 to 39.98 – an amount not even measurable on a bathroom scale.

Singling out one set of products in such an overly simplistic manner only undermines efforts to combat this complex issue.  Consumers do not support these taxes and recognize them for what they truly are – a money grab to raise revenue.”

American Beverage Association Responds to Latest Institute of Medicine Report

“Obesity is a serious public health issue facing our nation, and we all must work together to solve it.   We commend the Committee for their systematic analysis and for recognizing that physical activity plays an important role in a comprehensive solution.  However, advocating discriminatory policies that uniquely focus on sugar-sweetened beverages is the wrong approach. In fact, government data shows that sugar-sweetened beverages account for only 7 percent of the calories in the average American’s diet, and have been declining for more than a decade while obesity continued to rise. Focusing on a small and declining source of calories in the diet is a wrong-headed approach that distracts from meaningful solutions that promote healthier diets overall, as well as increased physical activity."

American Beverage Association Responds to General Dentistry Paper

“This study was not conducted on humans and in no way mirrors reality.  The authors used slices of tooth enamel samples from extracted molars, and then placed them in petri dishes of liquid for extended periods of time.  People do not keep any kind of liquid in their mouths for 15 minute intervals over five day periods. Thus, the findings of this paper simply cannot be applied to real life situations.  Furthermore, it is irresponsible to blame foods, beverages or any other single factor for enamel loss and tooth decay (dental caries or cavities).  Science tells us that individual susceptibility to both dental cavities and tooth erosion varies depending on a person’s dental hygiene behavior, lifestyle, total diet and genetic make-up.”

Beverage Industry Addresses Caramel Coloring And 4-MEI

The companies that make caramel coloring for our members' soft drinks are now producing it to meet California's new standard, and it will be used in products nationwide. Consumers will notice no difference in our products and have no reason at all for any health concerns, as supported by FDA and regulatory agencies around the world. Beverage Industry Responds to Sugar Commentary

"The authors of this commentary attempt to address the critical global health issue of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. However, in doing so, their comparison of sugar to alcohol and tobacco is simply without scientific merit. Moreover, an isolated focus on a single ingredient such as sugar or fructose to address health issues noted by the World Health Organization to be caused by multiple factors, including tobacco use, harmful alcohol use, an unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity, is an oversimplification. There is no evidence that focusing solely on reducing sugar intake would have any meaningful public health impact. Importantly, we know that the body of scientific evidence does not support that sugar, in any of its various forms - including fructose, is a unique cause of chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease or metabolic syndrome."

Beverage Industry Responds to Danish Study on Soda

"This is a Danish study of just 47 already overweight people, which the authors themselves acknowledge limits ‘the power' of their analysis. In fact, the findings cannot prove cause and effect, nor can they be applied to the public at-large.

Let's be clear - there is nothing unique about soda, whether sweetened with sucrose or HFCS, when it comes to obesity or other obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease or metabolic syndrome. All this study shows is the need for controlling weight gain by balancing the calories we take in from all foods and beverages with those we burn through physical activity. Those are the keys to a balanced, healthy and active lifestyle."

Beverage Industry Responds to Health Affairs Paper on Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes

Beverage Industry Responds to Paper on School Beverages

"By looking at data from 2004 and 2007, this study ignores the dramatic changes in the school beverage landscape achieved by our industry over the last five years, making it effectively useless. President Clinton called this ‘breathtaking progress' and applauded industry for its' ‘good faith and aggressiveness' in implementing the guidelines."

Beverage Industry Responds to Latest Rudd Report

"The people at our member companies - many of whom are parents themselves - are delivering on their commitment to advertise only water, juice and milk on programming for children under 12. In fact, recent research supports that there has been a dramatic change in food and beverage advertising during children's programming, with advertisements for soft drinks decreasing by 96 percent between 2004 and 2010 alone.
This report is another attack by known critics in an ongoing attempt to single out one product as the cause of obesity when both common sense and widely accepted science have shown that the reality is far more complicated."

Latest Study on Teens and Soda is Sensational But Not Scientific

"The authors of this study failed to factor out other important considerations and, importantly, did not prove cause and effect. The fact remains that there is no scientific evidence to support that young adults who consume sugar-sweetened beverages are more likely to carry a weapon or perpetrate violence. The conclusions of the authors, who surveyed less than 1,900 Boston public high school students, are not representative of the broader teen population. In a world where eight teens ages 16 to 19 die every day from motor vehicle injuries according to CDC, this study may result in false misperceptions about sugar-sweetened beverage consumption with no scientific evidence."
