American Beverage Association Statement
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American Beverage Association (ABA) and its members today expressed disappointment in the decision by Judge Batts of the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York to lift the injunction regarding the implementation of the recent amendments to the New York bottle bill for products other than bottled water.
The beverage industry remains committed to being a leader in environmental stewardship. However, bottle bills are not the answer to addressing solid waste issues. Rather, they are simply another tax on consumers. Furthermore, deposit systems are inefficient and ineffective, and do little to help the environment as they target such a small part of the waste stream.
Communities need a comprehensive solution that increases recycling rates across the board - not one that singles out beverage containers, which are among the most recycled consumer products on the market.
