School Wellness Policies

The Beverage Industry's Role

In order to combat the childhood obesity challenge, the 108th Congress voted to provide comprehensive solutions that incorporate healthy habits, nutritional education and increased physical activity by reauthorizing the National School Lunch Program as part of the larger Child Nutrition Act. Under reauthorization, the program included a new policy initiative intended to create a healthier atmosphere in the nation’s schools.

Beginning July 1, 2006, this initiative mandates that school districts participating in the school lunch program will be required to establish “local school wellness policies.”

The beverage companies are out front leading the food and beverage industry on school wellness issues. Our School Beverage Guidelines would make for a strong component of any local school wellness policy.

Balance is Everything

We know that it takes everyone – parents, teachers, school administrators, health professionals and elected officials – working together to teach children about the importance of a balanced lifestyle. With school wellness policies that promote better nutrition and a commitment to exercise, along with new School Beverage Guidelines, schools can support parents’ efforts by helping children to make informed choices that will impact them for a lifetime.
