What's In for Back to School

New School Beverage Guidelines

As America's children go back to school this fall, the beverage industry is working to provide a broad range of lower-calorie, nutritious and smaller-portion beverage choices. The American Beverage Association and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation developed new School Beverage Guidelines that will limit the number of calories children and teens consume through beverages at school.

America's leading beverage companies - Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages, The Coca-Cola Company, and PepsiCo - are doing their part to strengthen school wellness by helping our children learn the importance of balancing calories consumed and calories burned.

Study the School Beverage Guidelines

We all know the importance of raising healthy children. That's why the beverage industry teamed with Alliance for a Healthier Generation to develop new School Beverage Guidelines as part of the Alliance's Healthy Schools Program. This program will help foster healthy school environments for America's students by offering even more lower-calorie and nutritious beverages during the regular and extended school day.

The American Beverage Association, PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, and Cadbury Schweppes have joined with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to adopt these guidelines and will work closely with schools to implement them. Learn more.

What Parents Need to Know

Question: Why do beverage companies want to sell their products in schools?

Answer: As part of the local community, beverage companies have a strong and long-lasting commitment to the education process in America. In fact, beverages, including soft drinks, have been sold in schools for more than 50 years. These business partnerships between beverage companies and schools are a "win-win" situation. Beverage companies, student, schools and taxpayers all benefits.

Working Together

We know that parents can't do it alone. That's why the American Beverage Association and its member companies have launched a national print and online advertising campaign to raise awareness among parents, teachers, school administrators and others about the new School Beverage Guidelines.
