A brisk winter chill in the air and the hustle of weekend present shopping means that the holiday season is upon us. And with all of the pressure to balance year-end deadlines at work with the festive celebrations with friends and family, we know it can be tough to carve out time in the busy schedule for exercise. That’s why we wanted to take a minute to remind you to stay active this holiday season. There’s no reason not to get a jump start on your fitness goals for 2012!

Plus, you can take advantage of Clear on Calories to help you out. By voluntarily putting calorie labels on the front of every bottle, can and pack we produce, we’re making it easier for consumers to make informed choices about the beverages that are best for themselves and their families.

Get out there and have fun with family and friends this December. And don’t forget to stay hydrated!

We may be about a week away from Thanksgiving, but if you’re like some of us here at Sip & Savor, you’re already daydreaming about turkey and stuffing, football games, the Macy’s Parade and perhaps even tackling “Black Friday” holiday shopping. Of course, we’re looking forward to visiting with friends and family, too.

But as we start to plan for holiday travel, making sure we get some exercise during our excursions can often take a back seat. There’s no doubt retail therapy may help you to burn off some of those extra calories from Thanksgiving Day, but there are many simple ways to ensure we keep up with some sort of exercise routine.

Today, we thought we’d share an About.com article with some quick tips to make sure that, just as you plan your holiday meal and your travel itinerary, you also make plans to stay active and exercise. Maybe a family game of flag football is the way to go for your crowd, or perhaps you’ll be in a place where shoveling will be necessary – and can help to burn calories. Wherever you may be during the upcoming holiday season, options abound. Just make sure to think ahead – and squeeze in some activity before the tryptophan kicks in!

Just as we are all returning from the summer holidays and long Labor Day weekend, new tips are emerging for how to keep up a fitness program – despite both your job and the forthcoming weather changes.

The Washington Post offers up 12 exercises that — assuming they don’t interfere with your job — can be done right at the workplace. The newspaper also provides information from experts on physical activity solutions for the deskbound.

The increasing interest in the topic of workplace fitness comes as research has explored how today’s workplace is far more sedentary than the work environment of decades ago when work itself — in the field or in manufacturing, for example–meant a physical workout.

You may find some ideas that will work for you and others that may not, but paying attention to the concept of incorporating physical activity into the workday is worth serious consideration.

Whatever you decide, we hope you’ll keep in mind that a key component to maintaining a healthy weight balancing calories consumed from all foods and beverages with those expended through physical activity and exercise.

Here’s to staying active!

It’s hard to believe that the last few weeks of summer are upon us. Before we know it, peak vacation season will be over, children will be back in school and young adults will head off to their first days of college. We hope you’ve taken advantage of the many wonderful things summer has to offer – from taking long bike rides and swimming outdoors to picking seasonal fruit and perhaps enjoying an ice cream float (with your favorite non-alcoholic beverage, of course.)

But we also recognize that this time of year brings a great deal of change for families across America. So we thought we’d remind our readers about how to hold on to some things that can be constant from season to season. Just because the weather starts to cool down doesn’t mean we need to be less active. After all, regular physical activity – along with a balanced diet – is key to maintaining a healthy weight. And some of those activities you enjoy so much during the summer – like swimming laps or a family outing to pick fruit – can continue well into the fall (which is still quite a few weeks away). Instead of swimming outdoors, take it indoors at a local recreation center. And even though you can’t pick berries at the local orchard, fall will be prime time for picking apples.

So remember – whatever the season, keep a few things constant: consuming a variety of foods and beverages in moderation and getting regular exercise.

Heading off to college is an exciting chapter in young people’s lives–selecting courses, meeting roommates and outfitting dorm rooms or apartments. Beyond the education, and the fun, it’s an important chapter in the journey to adult independence.

Before the fall semester starts and the stress of assignments and exams begins, now is great time to lay out a plan to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Remember that the key to maintaining a healthy weight is balancing calories consumed from all foods and beverages with those burned through physical activity.

Many college campuses offer great venues for walking, jogging, swimming, biking and playing team sports as well as no shortage of companions for those activities.

We at Sip & Savor wish this year’s freshman class a great collegiate experience and, of course, good grades.

As the August vacation season winds down, we at Sip & Savor encourage you to fill out a September calendar ahead of time that will help ensure that summer’s physical activity and balanced diets live on.

Those monthly planners that are so indispensable at the office can help at home as well–not just for plugging in appointments and car pool duties, but for blocking out time for workouts and play, family meals and outings.

As you look ahead to your fall schedules, we also hope you’ll take a moment at the grocery store to check out the new calorie labels America’s beverage companies are adding to the front of every can, bottle and pack they produce. With Clear on Calories, we’re working together to provide calorie information at consumers’ fingertips, so they can choose what’s right for themselves and their families.

These labels are now on many of your favorite beverages at stores around the country. And as you do your post-vacation shopping, you’ll find myriad beverage options that our member companies produce including no- and low-calorie choices.

Starting today – it’s Exercise with Your Child Week. What a great way to share with your children the importance of physical activity and work in some quality time while heading outside for a game, swim or hike.

Some recommended activities listed online are bike riding, jumping rope, playing tennis and even a game of hopscotch. And if you round up some families in the neighborhood, you could probably organize a fun game of kickball.

So get out there and get active. After all, a key component to maintaining a healthy weight is to balance calories consumed from all foods and beverages with those expended through physical activity and exercise.

Enjoy the outdoors and don’t forget to stay hydrated!

You might be as relieved as us to hear that the NFL lockout has ended. After four and a half months, an agreement was reached last week.

With pre-season just around the corner, we thought we’d highlight a great program sponsored by the NFL and the American Heart Association. NFL Play 60 Challenge is all about encouraging youth to be active for at least 60 minutes a day. The program’s website has places for kids to pledge activity, and is a great resource for teachers and parents, too. There’s even a map that helps you find the nearest playground.

As our favorite players are getting back on the field, we continue to spread the word that everyone should remember to get out and get active. With resources and information from programs like Play 60, it’s easier than ever to come up with clever ideas for you and your family on how to be active.

So head to NFL Play 60 and celebrate the upcoming season with some moves of your own. And don’t forget to stay hydrated!
