If you’re a regular reader of Sip & Savor, then you know we like to share information about recycling. After all, we care a great deal about our environment. In fact, our industry’s containers are 100 percent recyclable – and we want to help you do your part to bring those containers “Full Circle.” But we also want to remind you that it’s important to recycle all recyclables, including newspapers and magazines; cardboard and paperboard; glass bottles and jars; aluminum foil (make sure it’s clean) and metal cans; plastic bags, bottles and containers; and more.

We hope you try to do your best to recycle no matter where you are – at home, on-the-go or at the office. So find out what you can do to make recycling a part of your life, if it isn’t already. Find out if your community has a curbside recycling program. A good place to start is by contacting your local department of recycling, transportation or sanitation. Some cities also have public space recycling bins available on streets, in parks and in other locations to help you out when you’re on the move. And many office buildings have recycling requirements. If your office doesn’t, try checking out Earth911.com for great tips on how to create a workplace recycling program. Earth911.com also has a nifty tool to help you find out “what” you can recycle “where” by entering your location to find a recycling center.

Wherever you may be, we encourage you to “Think Inside the Bin.” And if you’d like to learn more about some examples of ABA member companies’ efforts to support and promote recycling in their businesses and among consumers, check out our news release from last year’s America Recycles Day.

We hope you find time to “refresh” – but when you do, please be sure to recycle.

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Green Monday … If you’re paying attention to the news, or perhaps the catalogs appearing in your mail box or the special offers arriving in your e-mail, the holiday retail season is clearly underway. So far, retailers are reporting sales are up – a good thing that will help spur the economy.

But it’s hard to believe the Christmas holiday is little more than a week away. If you’ve still got shopping to do, there are plenty of tips online to help you develop your strategy – and to help you avoid overspending.

Whether you’re ready for the upcoming holiday, or haven’t even started to prepare, we hope you find time to relax and enjoy all the season has to offer. And remember, there are many ways to incorporate your favorite non-alcoholic beverages into this time as well – from reflecting on fun memories of the beverages you and your family shared as children, to making holiday ornaments out of recycled beverage containers, to basting your holiday ham with cola.

Whatever you do, have a safe and happy holiday!

Ford recently announced that the carpeting in its Ford Escape will be partially comprised of recycled plastic bottles. Now that’s “Thinking Inside the Bin!” We’re also told adding the plastic actually makes the carpet more durable! According to this column we found about the project, it’s estimated that more than four million bottles will be repurposed for the new Escape’s carpeting.

Being environmentally responsible is a continuous effort for our member companies, too. They are constantly working on new ways of further reducing their impact on the environment. This includes reducing and reusing 100 percent recyclable packaging, using more post-consumer recycled materials and deploying hybrid trucks for deliveries. Our companies are working on saving energy and reducing green house gasses (GHGs), too.

To learn more about our environmental and recycling efforts, please visit our website. And be sure to check back with us here or on Facebook and Twitter!

Today is America Recycles Day, the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling. Recycling is an issue that our industry takes very seriously, and our member companies are doing a lot to help promote awareness of its importance. After all, we all need to do our part to protect and preserve our planet for generations to come.

There are lots of ways to take part in this special day; and if you visit the America Recycles Day website, you can plug in your zip code to find out what’s happening in your community. You can also take the pledge to learn about recycling options in your community and reduce your personal waste.

If you don’t know about the recycling options available in your local community, you can often find out by visiting the website of your local department of public works or Earth911.com. We also encourage you to visit the Recycle Together website to find out all kinds of things about recycling, and to read about some interesting efforts underway around the country. You can also read more about recycling by visiting our issue site.

It’s all about three very important words: reduce, reuse, recycle! So today, and every day, remember to “Think Inside the Bin” and recycle your favorite beverage containers – they are made from 100 percent recyclable packaging. And while you’re at it, don’t forget about all of your other recyclables – from newspapers and magazines to laundry containers and more.

In addition to formulating, manufacturing and delivering the wide variety of beverages many enjoy, our member companies work tirelessly to be environmentally responsible. In fact, our industry has been a leader in many packaging innovations, recycling initiatives and green building practices that help foster environmental stewardship.

Innovative lightweight packaging has reduced the energy and raw materials used to create our industry’s bottles and cans and bottles – which, as a reminder, are 100 percent recyclable. In fact, the beverage industry’s cans and bottles are among the most recycled consumer packaging in the country. And we also help to encourage recycling through our work with The Climate Group, support of America Recycles Day and our promotion of “Think Inside the Bin.”

Here at Sip & Savor we recognize how important it is to do our part to help protect and preserve our planet – and we are proud to be a part of an industry that does, too. We encourage you to check out the resources on our recycling page. Find out what happens to your recycled cans and bottles and more ways you can get involved with important recycling programs in your own community.

On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in the New World two months after setting sail from Spain. His intentions had been to chart a course to China and India in search of gold and spices for the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Instead, Columbus found himself becoming the first European to explore America since the Viking age. The story of Columbus is a tale of survival and great achievements, as well as historic controversy.

Today, we commemorate a celebrated explorer, honor the diversity of American heritage and invigorate our sense of adventure.

However you choose to recognize the holiday, we here at Sip & Savor encourage you to help protect and preserve our great country for generations to come by remembering to “Think Inside the Bin” and recycle your beverage containers, as well as all recyclables.

If you take a look at the latest happenings in Knoxville, Tenn., you’ll see a city focused on comprehensive measures that will increase recycling rates and provide curbside recycling access to tens of thousands more residents. The city formally launched a recycling program called “Do Your Part with the Cart” – an initiative that will provide the option of curbside recycling services to residents. To check out this cool video that explains the program, click here.

Carts for recyclables are provided to households at no cost, and, to make it even more convenient, residents do not have to sort any of the materials! More than 17,600 homes have already registered for the program, and more are joining up every day.

We wanted to take a minute to applaud city leaders who worked on bringing this program to the citizens of Knoxville – excellent work!

We at Sip & Savor have had the benefit of being able to use a number of recycling programs in our own neighborhoods of Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas. Our member companies provide public space recycling bins in the city and on the National Mall and have committed to supporting local community recycling programs to ensure that our containers find their next life in the recycling stream..

As our member companies continue to find ways to promote environmentally conscious ways of conducting business, we encourage you to keep your eyes open for the prominent three-arrow logo reminding you to reduce, reuse and recycle. And remember – Think Inside the Bin!

We at Sip & Savor notice in our backyard the Coca-Cola/ Waste Management Fan Cans found throughout Nationals Park and the PepsiCo Dream Machine recycling bins on street corners in downtown Washington, D.C. These are but two examples of what our member companies are doing in communities across the country to make it easier for Americans enjoying their favorite beverage to recycle those containers.

As our member companies continue to seek ways to further reduce their environmental footprint, we also encourage you to recycle – please “Think Inside the Bin” wherever your summer trails take you.

If you’ve been reading Sip & Savor with any regularity, you likely already know that our industry feels strongly about comprehensive recycling and its many benefits. Bottle bills are outdated, ineffective, inefficient and costly. Comprehensive recycling, however, is highly effective, less costly for consumers and communities, and is readily accessible. On that last point, you can check out a 2009 survey that showed 74 percent of the total population has access to some form of curbside recycling at home.

We can give you two other important reasons why comprehensive recycling is a better way than bottle bills:
1) It addresses all recyclables rather than singling out just one part of the waste stream
2) Convenience – In fact, people overwhelmingly prefer taking all of their recyclables out to the curb over lugging them back to grocery stores and recycling facilities

If you want to find out more about recycling in communities across America, we encourage you to visit Recycle Together. And when you finish reading your newspaper or favorite magazine, using up those last drops of laundry detergent, or balling up that aluminum foil you used on the grill – remember they are all recyclable. We also encourage you to always “Think Inside the Bin” and make sure to recycle your beverage containers.
